What happens when you come to a workshop for the first time?

First of all you have hopefully called 423-0880 or emailed us and made contact with someone so you can make sure we're on schedule that day and just to chat with a friendly person who you can look for when you arrive.

Try to arrive at 1:50 or so - a bit early. Then just go say "hello, I'm new " and you will be welcomed like a long lost friend. Your first workshop is free, after that the cost is just $5 per week.

We will set you up with one of the instruments, Agogo (bells), Tambourim (small drum hit with stick), Surdo (large drum) or something else. We might move you around at some point - just go with the flow.

We were all new members at one point!

Try to never feel overwhelmed if you can't keep up. It's not just you! Samba takes a while to learn and it's sometimes not as easy as it looks. Watch and listen to the other members. Watch the leader Carlos for cues. Don't worry if someone stands in front of you to demonstrate and get you up to speed. It's totally normal and we want you to enjoy it as much as we do.

To get an idea of what to expect have a listen to the following short sound clip. It's a classic call and response known as an "in-call" for a basic samba rhythm. First you hear the leader strike a series of calls, followed by the call-and-response sequence and then the whole band begins.

Most of all - come have fun and come back!
